The Hunger of the Gods continues John Gwynne’s acclaimed Norse-inspired epic fantasy series, packed with myth, magic and bloody vengeance。

Lik-Rifa, the dragon god of legend, has been freed from her eternal prison。 Now she plots a new age of blood and conquest。

As Orka continues the hunt for her missing son, the Bloodsworn sweep south in a desperate race to save one of their own – and Varg takes the first steps on the path of vengeance。

Elvar has sworn to fulfil her blood oath and rescue a prisoner from the clutches of Lik-Rifa and her dragonborn followers, but first she must persuade the Battle-Grim to follow her。

Yet even the might of the Bloodsworn and Battle-Grim cannot stand alone against a dragon god。

Their hope lies within the mad writings of a chained god。 A book of forbidden magic with the power to raise the wolf god Ulfrir from the dead 。 。 。 and bring about a battle that will shake the foundations of the earth。

Good continuation of the first book, expanding the world and the characters。 Also great that the second book explores some other characters and the story from their view, knowing this I hope the last book in the series will do the same!

Great follow up to the first book, really enjoying the series。 Love the characters。

Well, book one was a classic, and Geynne exceeded it here。 Absolute blockbuster of fantasy fiction full of monsters, betrayal, death, and battles galore。 He writes baddies particularly well, and the introduction of two new POV characters adds even more depth to an already mighty tale。 Yes, I am a total fan boy when it comes to his writing, now nine books and all five stars, but this was awesome, and waiting for the conclusion is a killer。 Just read it。

I really liked it。 Overall: 4/5 (21/25)If you liked The Shadow of the Gods, then Hunger has a more varied plot, stronger character work, improved writing style choices and much better exploration of themes。Spoilers below。Plot: 3。5/5Orka, Elvar and Varg are back with some baddie pov's thrown in, too。 The main plotlines from The Shadow of the Gods finally are resolved, except for Varg's, and there's setup for the war between Gods likely to come in the last book。Orka is still searching for her son, I really liked it。 Overall: 4/5 (21/25)If you liked The Shadow of the Gods, then Hunger has in, too。 The main plotlines from The Shadow of the Gods finally are resolved, except for Varg's, and there's setup for the war between Gods likely to come in the last book。Orka is still searching for her son, culminating in a cliffhanger at the very end。 There were some questionable decisions in her plotline, such as letting a baddie escape, but Orka is still fun to read and follow。 Her storyline is a lot slower in this book compared to the first, with much less action happening with her and her crew, but still a solid story arc with a great conclusion。 (4/5)Elvar has a lot of good fortune this time around。 Instead of trying to impress her father, she's now in competition with him for power。 A lot of her story involves having a God under heel, and I don't enjoy that aspect of this world。 She was trying so hard to impress her father in the first book of the series, but in this book that escalates big time into pure hate。 Still my least favorite storyline。 (2/5)Varg No-Sense is starting to win me over but he doesn't even get much of a storyline this time。 There are only like two scenes involving Varg and the thread to search for his sister's killer。 Instead, we are following Glornir's story, his search for Vol, through Varg's pov。 This makes Varg a very passive character in his own storyline, but I was rooting for Glornir and Vol to reunite, so it was still a good plotline。 (3/5)Biorr and Gudvarr are the baddies being followed。 Biorr is shown to struggle with returning to his old crew。 Gwynne is making him grey but he's still a baddie to me。 Gudvarr on the other hand is given a pov that made me hate him more and I enjoyed watching him snivel his way around。 (Biorr 3/5, Gudvarr 5/5)Setting: 5/5Everything to love, all the wintery Norse flavorings, from The Shadow of the Gods is still here。 Plus Gwynne explores Iskidan, which gave me slight Egyptian/Nile vibes。 Night hags and some gnarly parasite pirates get added to the roster of cool monsters。 We get some new Gods, northern and southern, either introduced or hinted at to varying degrees。 Gwynne builds on his established world pretty well and I had no new criticisms。 Still an amazing world to delve into。Characters: 4/5Orka got her big character arc in Shadow, so she doesn't change much in Hunger。 She does lean further into becoming more trusting of her companions, relying more and more on their help and skills。 Remains my favorite character and still amazing。 (5/5)Elvar was a major miss for me in Hunger。 She had a major escalation in her feelings towards her family that seemed to come out of nowhere。 The motivation was weak and felt forced and inconsistent (if her mother was hurt in the past, Elvar would have had this strong hate for them already in Shadow, but she just didn't)。 She doesn't do any growing or changing as a character, despite her new role among her crew。 I didn't like following her at all。 (1/5)Varg, or really the Bloodsworn all together, are growing on me。 Varg doesn't have much growth in Hunger, still training and having no sense。 There is a slight change as some Bloodsworn mention he is starting to ask good questions now and have some sense, but this was minimal work towards a satisfying character arc。 Still, his bonds with the Bloodsworn are growing and that's been an improvement。 The Brotherhood trope works for me once I like characters and now I'm liking these characters as they get developed more and more。 (4/5)Gwynne did a good job with Biorr's character arc, showing his struggles with being a literal and figurative rat。 The emotional tumult of being a spy and traitor, forming bonds then breaking them, and the awkwardness of returning to old friends。 The solid themes touched on in this book are done so through Biorr。 (5/5)Gudvarr is not meant to be liked and Gwynne writes arrogance and pompous almost too well。 I love to hate this narcissist。 (5/5)Style: 5/5The action is dialed down a bit in Hunger but still never boring and it's hard to stop reading。 Some chapters are ended too soon/awkwardly just to keep the fast chapter switching Gwynne likes to use in this series。 The action is still excellent。Everything still smells like shite and Gwynne favors realism, describing in great detail preparations for battle, urination, and other less important/more mundane aspects of life。 Gwynne does find new and better ways to present these aspects and the repetition in Shadow has been reduced and improved upon in Hunger。The tone is still in my wheel-house, with grimdark and dark fantasy elements and even including some awesome horror elements!。 Those zombie/parasites were unexpected and a new delight to haunt my dreams。Characters felt much more distinct than in Shadow and individual voices shine with the inclusion of Biorr and Gudvarr, even if they are negative voices。I loved Gwynne's writing style in Shadow and it only gets better in Hunger。Themes: 3。5/5With Gudvarr the theme of Survival is explored, but Biorr gets all the really good theme work。 The challenges of being a spy, creating bonds and then breaking them, shifting allegiances, returning to friends after betraying other friends, and feeling out-of-place all take center stage。 The displacement of children in war and training children for war are introduced but not explored to any depth。 I really liked the themes presented and it was a major improvement from the first book in the trilogy。 。。。more

The Hunger of the Gods by John Gwynne is the second book in the "Bloodsworn Saga"。 This book is a Grimdark Fantasy based on Norse mythology。 It is told from the viewpoint of three main characters。 Elvar Fire-Fist is the daughter of Jarl Storr who decides to make her own way in the world by joining a mercenary band, the "Battle-Grim", to gain fame and glory。 Varl No-Sense is a former thrall who escapes his life of slavery and joins the "Bloodsworn", another mercenary band, and eventually takes hi The Hunger of the Gods by John Gwynne is the second book in the "Bloodsworn Saga"。 This book is a Grimdark Fantasy based on Norse mythology。 It is told from the viewpoint of three main characters。 Elvar Fire-Fist is the daughter of Jarl Storr who decides to make her own way in the world by joining a mercenary band, the "Battle-Grim", to gain fame and glory。 Varl No-Sense is a former thrall who escapes his life of slavery and joins the "Bloodsworn", another mercenary band, and eventually takes his revenge on those who murdered his sister。 Orka Skullsplitter is a mother and former member of the Bloodsworn。 After her husband is murdered and her son taken she sets out on a quest to rescue her son and revenge herself on those who murdered her husband。 Mix in several revived from the dead gods who are basically insane and you have a tale to be sung about by the bards。 This is a dark and violent fantasy so if you don't like graphic violence stay away。 If, however, like me you enjoy Grimdark Fantasy this one is a great read。 。。。more

WHAT A RIDE!! I certainly loved this one a LOT more than the first one, but again- was it bc I took a five month long break halfway thru number one? I would assume。 Also you definitely have to read one before you read two。 Although two had a handy dandy ‘what happened before’ and a cast of characters, which I love。 Also idk how you could read this on a for real paper book bc their ‘magic spells’ are written in Icelandic (??) and I def needed my kindle to translate all of them。 Also am I really a WHAT A RIDE!! Well researched and thoughtfully rooted fantasy made this a joy to read。 The intertwined stories allow for beautifully crafted tales that give you just enough of a hook to keep reading until the next time you see the name at the start of a chapter。
